Here’s an odd little thing… three people in the past two days have told me how polite, friendly and helpful I am. Don’t frown too hard when I say that I think that’s just one part of my Britishness! I live in a small city and when not deep in a time of pandemic it is full of tourists. People who live here are really friendly and take the time to help those lost. I do honestly think that’s how many of us are deep down. Who doesn’t know what it feels like to be lost, or new somewhere?
Now I ‘live’ on a marina in SL, life is busier. I am under a flight path for an airport, and boats of all kinds and sizes sail past me. I have to admit I like the constantly changing view, but it also means that people stop and want to speak. We have had new people move onto the marina this week, and it’s taken only a couple of minutes to send them an IM of welcome. I also have encountered a few people wondering how much a berth costs to rent, and I have been able to point them towards the information.
To me these have been no big gestures at all, and have only taken me a few minutes, but I have been honestly amazed at how grateful people are to find that politeness. Aren’t we all this way? Do others simply live in absolute silence?
That said I can’t help but feel a slight shudder that politeness seems so rare that it might be mistaken for something more, which it absolutely is not with me! Ha!
Now don’t get me wrong, if somebody merits me being absolutely the opposite of friendly and polite I am more than capable of heading to that extreme, but surely it’s better to simply greet people with that degree of kindness and politeness that we would like to meet from others?
