There is something… life-giving about standing in rain. We have had little chance to escape it here the past few days, but I do love the music that it brings when each drop hammers onto an umbrella, or splatters onto the flatness of leaves. There’s such a freshness to the air in contrast to how much of the summer has been.
I have two umbrellas which never cease to be commented on. One is the brightest of yellows, and the other has a big red flower on it. You wouldn’t believe how many people say that it’s nice to see something so cheerful on a dark and rainy day. I do wonder if it’s in part the fact that I never seem to have outgrown that childish joy of walking round in wellies in puddles at the right time. With the right clothes, even the wettest of weather can be… fun.
That is until it goes on too long.
I live in a city which is prone to flooding. The water levels are monitored, but already yesterday the police were keeping an eye on one point of the city which often ends up under water. It remained dry, but in other parts of this county flooding hit, and in one part the railway was closed by a landslide.
In manageable chunks, all things can be seen as positive, but it’s when they mount up over time that they can flood and overwhelm us. Well that’s how it feels to me with how I am. Rain’s all good and well for a little, but it’s even nicer when I have arrived back home, and can get warm, watching it through the window with a cup of coffee from the confines of a cosy house.
